Huge deposits of oil are discovered in 1923 by exploration drillers under the lands owned by the Osage Indian Tribe in Osage County, Oklahoma. The royalty payments bring immense wealth and prosperity to the 2,200 full-blooded members of the tribe, but also brought crime, murder, and corruption. The young Bureau of Investigation (original name of the FBI until 1935) was brought in to investigate and the case became one of the most noteworthy in the Bureau’s history of this era.

The story and focus presented in this motion picture differs significantly from the book by the same name by author David Grann on which it is based.
